The partnership between the U.S. CDC and Africa CDC have assisted in slowing the spread of COVID-19 on the continent of Africa (Ministry of Health Kenya, 2020). |
What are some issues that arise?
- Regardless of formal closures, movements continue across borders in Africa posing a significant threat to the spread of COVID-19
- Certain communities have little knowledge of COVID-19, which risk the lives of the populations along the borders and make controlling the virus difficult
- Cross border contamination can prevent people from seeking treatment due to stigma, which creates issues for those who move across the borders frequently like truck drivers
- “RCCE efforts for COVID-19 prevention should aim to reach key populations at a broad variety of locations, including formal and informal entry points and along transport routes. Engagement efforts should include truck and boda boda (motorcycle taxi) drivers, traders, migrant workers, fisherfolk and pastoralists, refugees and other displaced persons and other vulnerable groups, returnees, members of border communities, people seeking health care or other services and the contacts of these groups”
